A garden is the result of a process that stems from a desire or necessity that must be fulfilled in a predetermined space, conditioned by a series of factors, like the climate, orientation, soil quality, availability of water, adjoining buildings, etc. In the photo, the terrain and farm buildings at the Finca Las Tenadas before the creation of the current garden.
The topographical analysis of the space, captured in plans and sections, is an indispensable step prior to drawing up the plans for a garden. The plans of the Finca Las Tenadas shows the distinct functional and planting areas, as well as other elements, including the pergola, ponds and benches. The details of the preliminary design are adapted to the wishes of the client before beginning construction on the garden.
Not only does the studio take on a garden’s design, but it also manages its technical side, thereby assuring that the project is completed faithfully. It even has a garden construction company, which was responsible for carrying out the work seen in the photos. Construction begins by moving soil to establish the parterres and create terraces and slopes in accordance with the project’s requirements. Any ponds, pergolas, staircases, flooring, drains, etc. are built in parallel. The next step consists of preparing the soil for the plants.
The distinct areas for planting are marked on top of the already prepared soil. This makes it possible for the studio to install the automatic irrigation system before planting.
Once the irrigation system has been installed, the different species chosen by the studio can be placed in the soil following the distinct planting designs laid out by the project. The plants are sourced from the best greenhouses in Spain and Europe, to ensure their high quality.
The garden has been planted and it is now time to pay attention to the final construction details: extend the consolidated gravel (or the grass, as the case may be), finish off the parterres with borders, fill the ponds with water…
The garden is ready and as the plants grow it will transform into the designed space. The studio continues to follow its progress until it has been fully established.
